Chịu sự tác động từ bài phát biểu quan trọng của Chủ tịch Cục dự trữ liên bang Mỹ (Fed) Jerome Powell, giá vàng đã có 1 phiên “nhảy múa” với mức biến động lên tới 2% ở cả hai chiều lên và xuống. Sau khi tăng vọt lên mức 1.987 USD/ounce, có lúc giá rớt xuống chỉ còn 1.914 USD/ounce.
Trong bài phát biểu trực tuyến trong khuôn khổ hội nghị Jackson Hole, ông Powell đã thông báo những thay đổi quan trọng đối với các chính sách điều hành tiền tệ. Fed cho biết mới đây đã áp dụng “mục tiêu lạm phát trung bình” và thừa nhận lợi ích của 1 thị trường lao động khỏe mạnh. Fed vẫn giữ mức mục tiêu lạm phát 2%, nhưng mục tiêu mới là “cố gắng đạt được mức lạm phát trung bình 2%”, tức là Fed loại bỏ mức trần lạm phát cố định, sẵn sàng chấp nhận lạm phát tăng lên cao hơn 2%.
Các nhà giao dịch vàng đã biết trước bài phát biểu của ông Powell chắc chắn sẽ có đề cập đến lạm phát, và ban đầu giá vàng đã tăng hơn 30 USD/ounce. Tuy nhiên sau đó giá nhanh chóng đảo chiều vì ông Powell đã nói đúng như những gì thị trường dự báo, không có thông tin gì mới mẻ.
